Resources for Raising Conscious Kids: October 2023 Edition

As an agency, Bridgetown Baby is deeply committed to confronting bias within ourselves, building our skills, and creating an inclusive model of care that authentically serves our clients and contributes to culture change. This is work we all can do. It starts with us; it continues with our children - and we are their most important teachers. Each month, we'll be sharing resources for talking with kids about bias, celebrating diversity, and actions our families can take to create a world we all can live in.

In honor of National Hispanic Awareness Month, this month we dive into the colorful pages of Yum! ¡Mmmm! ¡Qué Rico! Americas' Sproutings.

Through lively haiku, author Pat Mora celebrates foods - including peanuts, blueberries, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, and more - that the first peoples of the Americas, and those who followed, have cultivated, enjoyed and revered for centuries. The rich illustrations show multiethnic and multiracial children and families interacting with animated versions of the foods they plant, harvest, prepare and eat.

Younger readers will enjoy the magical realism in these pages and have fun pointing out familiar foods, while older children will grow their understanding through the informational paragraphs included alongside the gorgeous imagery. Everyone in the family can be inspired by the subtle focus on stewardship - caring for the land and its inhabitants, and sharing the foods with which the earth sustains us.

Find Yum! ¡Mmmm! ¡Qué Rico! at your local library, or purchase at your local independent book shop or online at Powell’s.com.
