Resources for Raising Conscious Kids: April Edition

As an agency, Bridgetown Baby is deeply committed both to confronting bias within ourselves, building our skills, and creating an inclusive model of care that authentically serves our clients and contributes to culture change. This is work we all can do. It starts with us; it continues with our children - and we are their most important teachers. Each month, we'll be sharing resources for talking with kids about bias, celebrating differences, and actions our families can take to create a world we all can live in.

As parents, we are driven by instinct to protect our children from violence and danger. At the time of this publication, Russia is waging war in Ukraine - and it’s painful to imagine the lives of families whose ability to keep their children safe has been wrested from them by military aggression.

While many of us have the incredible privilege of safety, the emotional stress we may feel, snippets of conversation with family and friends, and discussions on the news can reach our children and leave them feeling confused. Sometimes the best protection we can offer is to give them words to explore the reality, build understanding, and encourage compassion and perspective.

A Kids Book About - a Portland-based entity building a body of kid-centered awareness-raising books and other media - is offering a FREE download of their new book A Kids Book About War. With warm and simple language, author Sarah Jones makes space for the feelings kids may have about war and offers the reassurance that understanding something can help us manage those feelings.

Download the book here - multiple digital formats are available, and you can make an optional donation to a curated selection of organizations working to support kids affected by war.
