Resources for Raising Race-Conscious Kids: June Edition

As an agency, Bridgetown Baby is deeply committed both to confronting bias within ourselves and dismantling the systemic racism that literally and figuratively stifles the potential of our BIPOC* community members. The work starts with us; it continues with our children - and we are their most important teachers. Each month, we'll be sharing resources for talking with kids about bias and celebrating differences.

As we mark the one year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, and as incidences of police violence against people of color continue to scar our communities, we are highlighting one of the many books created with intention to help children and their families explore issues of racial injustice.

In Something Happened in Our Town, two families — one White, one Black — discuss a police shooting of a Black man in their community. Working to answer children’s questions about this kind of traumatic event, the book offers support to families for discussing race and racism with their children and gives children tools to identify and counter racial injustice in their own lives.

It’s never too early to talk with kids about race.
