Kate Mullican
Postpartum Doula | she/her
“Kate is grounded, present, and so comforting at a time that is tender and stressful.”
— M.J., parent of 2
Kate has spent her career in service of the wellbeing of children and families, motivated by belief in the power of education and trust in our interconnectedness. Her path has taken her from early days as a young artist teaching middle school art, to tutoring children who struggled in the mainstream classroom, and then to more than a decade as a Montessori guide for children ages 0-3.
Serving as a postpartum doula is a natural extension of this thread. Her own journey of parenting - through multiple, unexplained first and second trimester pregnancy losses - was a time full of lessons about hope and trust, but also about advocacy, seeking out resources, and teamwork.
Kate’s work as a doula is rooted in her understanding that parents and babies both are here to manifest their unique character and abilities; she believes that babies thrive when parents are well supported. She allows babies and parents the time they need to find their rhythm, taking one day at a time, offering knowledgeable and helpful support, and trusting each individual’s process of continual growth. She enjoys working with first time parents and those for whom older children could also use support as the family grows.
While Kate’s roots are in the DC and Baltimore area, she fell in love with the Pacific NW over 20 years ago and lives with her family in North Portland. She’s someone who always has multiple books going at once and enjoys travel, hikes, and making things with her hands as a way to recharge.
