Resources for Raising Race-Conscious Kids: May Edition

As an agency, Bridgetown Baby is deeply committed both to confronting bias within ourselves and dismantling the systemic racism that literally and figuratively stifles the potential of our BIPOC* community members. The work starts with us; it continues with our children - and we are their most important teachers. Each month, we'll be sharing resources for talking with kids about bias and celebrating differences.

There are so many beautiful books for children that celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. In Minh Lê's Drawn Together, a boy and his grandfather, held apart by lack of common language, come together in a shared love of art. Caldecott-winning artist Dan Santat's illustrations provide a lush celebration of themes from modern superhero art and traditional Thai heroes. This poignant storyline offers insights into connecting across barriers, a message valuable for all young readers.
